Government approves fishing outside 30km zone from Fukushima

Translation from Hokkaido Shinbun, May 9th.

On May 8th, the government’s nuclear disaster taskforce gave the go ahead for commercial fishing in Fukushima outside of the 30km exclusion zone around the Fukushima Number 1 Nuclear Reactor. The Ministry for Fisheries also notified fishing industry groups of approval to clear floating debris in the area. They requested people to avoid excessive exposure of skin to minimize any affect of radiation.

The Ministry for Fisheries have also established a limit of 2100 hours for fishing operations on the sea outside of the 30km exclusion zone in the coming year, and specified conditions on diving and handling nets, among other activities. They also calculated the amount of radiation in the area based on test results taken for radiation in the ocean. The upper levels of test results indicated a maximum level of 1.43 milisiverts per person for 1 year, which is higher than the permissible limit of 1 milisivert per year per person. But the result is not considered high enough to cause any harm.
